SERP |
Search Engine Results Page | |
Positive Rule |
A positive rule is one that improves your SERP when it's fulfilled; Pages are rewarded for satisfying the rule. Rewards are generally much weaker than punishements. |
Negative Rule |
A negative rule is one that reduces your SERP when it's missed; Pages are punished not for satisfying the rule. Punishments are generally much harsher than rewards. |
Warning Rule |
Doesn't alter SERP either way, but you may need to be made aware that some things aren't included in SERP calculations at all (like frames and IFrames). |
On Page |
Content in Frames may be ignored by search engines |
| Content that's placed in linked IFrames or Frames is typically ignored by search engines and IFrames and Frames should thus be avoided - unless you're using them for things like linking google adwords or something similar. Ref: google ranking factors. | |
Content in IFrames may be ignored by search engines |
| See Content in Frames may be ignored by search engines. | |
Internal (same domain) links should not be broken |
| Internal (same domain) links should not be broken. Broken links indicate a poorly run site, poorly run sites will have lower SERP than well run sites. | |
On Page/Content |
Page should be not be listed by google as malware |
| Google maintains a list of urls that it has flagged as either malware or phising sites. Page should be not be listed
by google as malware through a tool called Google Safe Browsing. If your page is listed as either
malware or phising, your SERP will be severely limited and Firefox will refuse to show your page. Even if you only link to a page that's listed as either Phising or Malware, your SERP will be punished by the association. |
Page should be not be listed by google as phising |
| See Page should be not be listed by google as malware. | |
Page should be not be listed by Spamhaus DBML |
| The Spamhaus Domain Block List (DBL) is a realtime database of spam domains including spam payload URLs, spam sources
and senders ('right-hand side'), known spammers and spam gangs, and phish, virus and malware-related sites. If your page contains or points to content that include these links, you're residing in a bad neighbourhood and your SERP will be punished. As soon as the link is picked up by Google Safe Browsing, your entire site may be de-listed. See Page should be not be listed by google as malware. |
Page should not contain offensive terms |
| Pages that contain offensive/derogatory language may be punished by search engines.
We've even heard of adword clients that have been contacted by google, where google
threatened to remove their ads unless they removed some offensive words from their
source code - it wasn't even visible to users.
Clearly you should avoid having offensive or derogatory words on your site if you wish to make a professional impression, but it's also important from a SERP perspective. |
Page Frame(s) should not contain offensive terms |
| Your page should not link to IFrames that contain offensive or derogatory language. See Page should not contain offensive terms. | |
Page IFrame(s) should not contain offensive terms |
| Your page should not link to Frames that contain offensive or derogatory language. See Page should not contain offensive terms. | |
Page should not be too short |
| The page content should not be too short - search engines assume that visitors will prefer pages with some content to them so therefore a lack of content will reduce your SERP. Try to make sure your page contains at least 300 words. | |
On Page/Content Quality |
Page should not contain broken CSS links |

On Page/External Links |
Limit number of external links |
| Too many external links will make your page look spammy. | |
On Page/Keyword |
Overall Keyword Phrase Density should not be too low |
| The keyword phrase density of the page should not be too low, that is, out of all
the words on the page, your actual keyword phrase should be a significant percentage.
Note the difference between the actual keyword phrase and the individual keywords,
the phrase maintains the order of the words. This rule refers to the keyword phrase.
If it is too low, you should use your keyword phrase more frequently in the text. See Keyword-Keyword phrase should appear in Title. |

Overall Keyword Density should not be too low |

| The keyword density of the page should not be too low, that is, out of all the words
on the page, your actual keywords should be a significant percentage. Note the difference
between the actual keyword phrase and the individual keywords, the phrase maintains
the order of the words. This rule refers to the keywords themselves. See Keyword-Keyword phrase should appear in Domain Name.
If it is too low, you should use your keywords more frequently in the text. |
On Page/Keyword/Keyword |
Keyword-Keyword phrase should appear in Domain Name |
| Pages where the keywords/keyword phrase appears in the domain name are considered very relevant to a search. If you can't make your main domain include the keywords, consider creating a subdomain that contains the keywords. See Keyword-Keyword phrase should appear in Url and Use Hyphens (-) to separate keywords in url. | |
Keyword-Keyword phrase should appear in Url |
| Pages where the keywords/keyword phrase appears in your url are considered very relevant to a search. Try to build your link structure in such a manner that the keywords naturally appear in the url. If they appear in the domain name instead of the directory structure/document name, then that's even better. See Keyword-Keyword phrase should appear in Domain Name and Use Hyphens (-) to separate keywords in url. | |
Keyword-Keyword phrase should appear in Title |
| All pages should contain a title element, and pages where the title element contain the keywords words are given a SERP boost. Try to have your entire keyword phrase the title tag. | |
Keyword-Keyword phrase should appear in H1 / H2 or H3 |
| Headers (H1, H2 and H3) signal what's important on your page to your readers, but also search engines look for these when determining SERP. H1 are better than H2 and H3. Try to have your entire keyword phrase in a header tag. | |
Keyword-Keyword phrase should appear in Anchors text |
| Your keyword phrase and keywords should appear in anchor texts. Both link anchors (a href='..') and anchors you can link to (a name='..'). | |
Keyword-Keyword phrase should appear in Image Alt text |
| Images have an alt tag which is the text that's displayed when you hover the mouse cursor over the image. For vision impaired visitors, the image won't be shown at all instead the text will be shown. For search engines, this is great because it gives them a chance to figure out what the images on your site are depicting - use this to your advantage by making sure youre keywords appear on your alt tags. | |
Keyword-Keyword phrase should appear on Page |
| If your keywords don't appear at all on the page, you're very unlikely to get a good SERP, especially from On-Page optimizations. You could still acheave a good SERP from backlinks that mention the keywords, but not having them on the page will still hurt you. | |
Keyword-Keyword phrase should appear in Description |
| The description meta tag is a short description of your page. Your keyword phrase should appear here. | |
Density of Keyword-Keyword phrase should not be too high |
| Out of all the words on your webpage, your keywords/keyword phrase should be a significant part. But the density shouldn't be too high, because eventually it starts looking like keyword stuffing - which will make your website look spammy to search engines. | |
On Page/Page URL |
Page should not be excluded in Robots.txt |
| Page should not be excluded in Robots.txt. If the page is excluded by robots.txt, it will not be picked up for indexing by search engines and they will not appear in search results at all. Now, you may have reason to ignore this rule, in that case you should disable it in your account configuration. | |
Page URL should not be a redirect |
| When your page is a redirect, you lose a lot of PR that you've accumulated and start over. Also, all backlinks end up pointing to the wrong page. | |
Page URL should not be too long |
| If your url is too long it looks spammy. Human readable urls are short and therefore search engines prefer those. | |
Use Hyphens (-) to separate keywords in url |
| Hyphens are good for separating words in urls. Underscores also work, but reportedly search engines prefer hyphens. This especially useful when you add your keywords/keyword phrase to your url or domain. See Keyword-Keyword phrase should appear in Domain Name and Keyword-Keyword phrase should appear in Url. | |
Don't use too many hyphens in url (spam warning) |
| If you use too many hyphens in your url it starts to look spammy. | |
On Page/Page URL/Dynamic Pages |
Avoid dynamic pages, where possible |
| Dynamic pages are hard to spider and spiders might determine to skip some or all of your pages! If you can, try to use url-rewriting tools to reconstruct your url so that the dynamic parameters are turned into a path or a document name instead. | |
Don't use too many paramaters on dynamic pages |
| If you absolutely must use dynamic pages (see Avoid dynamic pages, where possible), make sure you don't use too many parameters. | |
On Page/Size and Speed |
Page should load fast |
| People don't like slow pages, they get bored and leave. Search engines have picked up on this and give slow loading pages a SERP punishment. See Page should not be too large, slow and large are not the same thing, but they're clearly related. | |
Page should not be too large |
| People don't like large pages, because they're slow to load and people get bored and leave. Search engines have picked up on this and give excessively large pages a SERP punishment. See Page should load fast, slow and large are not the same thing, but they're clearly related. | |
On Site |
Site should have a Sitemap |
| A sitemap is easy to create and there's no real reason not to. There are several free tools out there, for instance www.xml-sitemaps.com. Not having a sitemap makes your site look poorly maintained. If you do have a sitemap, google will most likely crawl your sitemap frequently and detect any changes that you register in your sitemap sooner than it would otherwise have picked up on them. | |
Sitemap should include page |
| If you have a sitemap, make sure your pages are present on it - see Site should have a Sitemap. | |
Site should have Robots.txt |
| Your site should have a robots.txt file - that doesn't exlude your pages! | |
Off Site/Linked to page |
No urls (links, iframes, frames, images) should be listed by google as malware |

External (different domain) links should not be broken |
| External (different domain) links should not be broken. Not as important as Internal (same domain) links should not be broken but important still for the same reason. Don't have broken links on your pages. | |
